Artifacts

Throughout the LD&T curriculum, we utilized educational technologies to create instructional videos. I plan on incorporating these enhanced video and multimedia skills in professional development around digital accessibility for the campus community.

In this artifact, the assignment was designed to develop and deliver a training video for a specific augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) application or platform that can be used in an educational setting such as a classroom. I used Halo AR as the AR application to be taught and utilized Panopto to create the training video.

We also used emerging technologies to create an animated instructional video. In this example, I used Powtoon to build an instructional video about 2- Factor Authentication.

PlayPosIt is a technology that allows the content creator to embed opportunities for learners to provide feedback on what they are learning as they watch a multimedia learning element.

In ECI 515, we explored technologies to support students in cultural awareness and construct cultural understanding in educational settings through investigations and technical representations of culture with emerging tools. ArcGIS StoryMaps is a mapping technology that allowed me to display my familiar culture. I enjoyed this project and can utilize it to create awareness around disability culture to support the campus community in understanding.

One of the most valuable skills obtained through the program was understanding the Instructional Design & Evaluation process. One of my favorite group projects was developing a professional development plan for librarians and accessible library services. This project helped solidify a process of thinking through how to build practical instructional elements and how to look at instructional design working as a team instead of as an individual. Part of my role on the team was as a subject matter expert and an instructional designer.

The program also honed my research skills. One of our projects was to develop an annotated bibliography to provide an overview of the main issues, arguments, and research within a particular area. I chose the topic of researching the Educational Benefits of Adding Captions to Multimedia, as I often have discussions with instructors about the benefits of captioning. This work taught me how to dig deeper into what the research shows to substantiate what I am asking people to do to increase the accessibility of their digital content.

The last skill I would like to highlight is the ability throughout the program to explore and utilize e-learning platforms and learning management systems. My experience before this program was building learning elements using basic slide decks and talking through them in face-to-face instructional settings. I feel more comfortable using the learning management system on campus, Moodle, and others such as Canvas, D2L, and Articulate 360 to design better instructional elements.

I used this skill set to build the 2021 NC State Digital Accessibility Excursion.
